Over the past several months Mrs. Ramos has spent many hours researching and recruiting caterers approved by the National School Lunch Program that offers healthy food options. ACA staff and students have tried several sample lunches to locate the perfect fit for our school. The company, Royal Catering, serves wheat bread, white chicken meat, fresh vegetables and fruit, and a variety of entrees. While the administrators conduct lunch duty students have been commenting how much they like the new food and believe it or not the students go back for seconds for the salad and fruit!! Students in grades 4-12 also have the option of choosing a salad served with chicken or a chicken salad wrap.
School lunches often meet the federal guidelines for nutrition but the meals are not appealing nor will students eat. This year at ACA we are seeing more students eating their whole lunch and even the staff is buying the entrees. Some students were disappointed that pizza is not served every Friday but again as a staff we made a conscious decision to introduce students to healthy foods and to not become dependent on pizza as a weekly option. Many statistics have demonstrated the importance of healthy eating habits correlated with academic success.
